"No salvation outside the church" is from Saint Cyprian of Carthage. The idea is that when all is said and done, as the universe is "rolled away like a garment" (Hebrews 1:10-12), only the Lord remains, and those in Him - that is his body the Church. Hence, one has to be joined to Christ, which means in the Church, to be saved. St Paul compares this to being "baptized in Moses" as the walls of the Red Sea collapse on those who are not "in Moses." But this unity in Christ implies unity with those who are in Christ in the mysteries of the Church, especialy the Eucharist which is a communal experience par excellence. |
