QUESTION:

8/19/2009: How do Orthodox explain the reason for premarital abstinence to their young adult children? Thank you.

ANSWER:

The key concept will probably be wisdom. Wisdom is a central theme in the Scriptures; wisdom is what results in a blessing, both temporary and eternal. Jacob is a biblical icon of one who sought wisdom. But wisdom (being a gift of the Holy Spirit) must be coupled with faith and hope. Young adults must have a profound relationship of faith and trust in Jesus Christ as the one who will lead them to the greatest joy and blessing. Those who abstain and entered into the mystery of mariage in purity receive blessings whic cannot compare with the soul and body destroying results of immorality. If the warning of the pains of the loss and tragedies caused by premarital relations must be emphasized, it is ultimately that relationship with God that will be the guide on the way. Frederica Matthews Green is a wonderful Orthodox author on this topic, and there are other excellent resources (including novels) outside Orthodoxy, such as The Squire and the scroll.
