QUESTION:

8/31/2009: What is the Orthodox teaching regarding giving? Specifically: 1) Are Orthodox Christians expected to tithe? If not, what principles govern Orthodox giving? 2) How is the Orthodox church supported financially? 2) How should Orthodox Christians direct their financial giving?

ANSWER:

(1) The prevalent view is that Orthodox Christians are not under tithing (10%) in a strict or legal sense; in fact, all of our "things" including our bodies and souls belong to God - we are only stewards and should give sacrificially, with a priestly attitude. Tithing could in a sense be thought about as a minimal indicator... (2) The Orthodox Communion worldwide exists in a variety of circumstances, ranging from state support (Greece) to persecution. In general, ecclesial institutions are supported by giving. (3) It is recommended that giving be directed to the local parish (assuming that satisfactory checks and balances are in place. In addition, direct donations to IOCC, OCMC, FOCUS (etc) are recommended.
