QUESTION:

9/9/2009: I would like to know the degree of power an orthodox priest has over a perishiner. And the degree of respect that is due to him as a priest. And what can be done if his power or authority is being abused. also, is an orthodox priest aloud to accept large personal gifts of property willed to him by a dying perishiner or otherwise given?

ANSWER:

In the Church, authority is always unto service, never despotic control. This is why the priest is himself under the authority of the bishop and everyone is accountable. There are of course instance of abuse of power or unhealthy relationships. The faithful can of course consult other clergy, including the bishop, to determine what is best for them and for the parish.

Orthodox clergy may typically receive a donation from their parishioners, including the donation of a house, but the bishop will also want to know the context of the donation, the nature of the relationship between the priest and donor, and many other details of the case before allowing the donation to be effective.
