QUESTION:

11/27/2009: Why do we not have active orders of monastics (e.g. medical or teachers)or tertiary orders like the Romans do?

ANSWER:

There are actually some "active" monastics in Greece and Russia, mostly nuns. But it is certain that in the Orthodox framework, those who want to help and live in the world have a different place that those who want to retire from the work and be monastics. Orthodox volunteers, nurses, doctors are actively helping in the world, but that is generally understood as a distinct work than that of monastics.
