QUESTION:

1/18/2010: Does the Orthodox Church use the title Queen of heaven for Mary in any of its Liturgy, in hymns, prayers, etc.? Thank you for your time.

ANSWER:

To my knowledge, the only instance of the title "queen" is in the Akathist which has "our queen..." In the recurring litany "Remembering our most holy, pure, blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever virgin Mary...", the English word "Lady" has royal connotations (in Greek and Slavonic).

The preparation of the Divine Liturgy (prokomedia) also involves the placing of a commemorative particle of bread for the Theotokos at the right side of the Lamb (the main large particle for the Lord) and the verse being read is Ps 45:9 (in LXX): "at thy right hand has stood the queen arrayed in gold." The specific expression "Queen of Heaven" does not appear to be used, but it is quite clear that the Mother of the Davidic King has the first right to the title of Queen."

For a Roman Catholic perspective on the concept of Queen Mother in the OT, see Queen Mother: A Biblical Theology of Mary's Queenship (Letter & Spirit Project) (Paperback)~ Edward Sri (Author), Scott Hahn (Author)
