QUESTION:

2/4/2010: I am seeing more and more people praying in church with their hands extended. I was alway taught that this act was for the Priest (two hands) and Decon's (one hand).

ANSWER:

Actually, this can be seen as a welcome return to Apostolic Tradition which is always binding on us:

Titus 1:8 "I desire, then, that in every place the men should pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument..."

At the very least, praying with lifted hand (and kneeling - see below) should be the private practice at home.

In general, this practice of raising one's hands is observed during the Our Father. There is also a return to the practice of kneeling at various point on non-Sunday services, which again is the ancient and normative practice.

PS: indeed, there are also specific times when only the priest prays with uplifted hands (not the people).
