QUESTION:

6/11/2010: just a general ques. i am a convert to the faith and i was wondering what the church teaches about all the similarities in the egyptian myths,,like horus and isis and how they seem to parralel the christian faith,,with father,,son,,ank, the cross,,amon and amen ,etc..are the just coincedence and how should an orthodox christian view and respond to such who make allegations that it is just a plagarizzed myth,,thank you,,

ANSWER:

Most of the parallels really don't exist when you look at the sources closely. When they do exist, they often refer to really basic aspects of any story, such as mother-child-father relationships, etc.

As C.S. Lewis used to say, Christianity is "the true myth" because it all really happened (the Gospel are not fables) and the story of Jesus incorporate all the elements of a story that addresses all the question of humanity: sin, death, resurrection, spiritual victory, power over evil, relationship with God and eternity, moral teachings, etc.

Among the early Christian writers, Justin Martyrs considered that some of the pre-Christian stories that very similar to the story of Jesus Christ were in fact demonically inspired.
